A new app designed to ease the daily struggles faced by autistic children and their families has launched to overwhelming success. “Jam Up!”, created by local mum Rachael, has garnered a 5-star rating on app stores and exceeded download expectations since its release on February 4th. The app’s innovative approach to gamifying everyday tasks like dressing and teeth-brushing has resonated deeply with parents and professionals alike.
Rachael, a healthcare professional and mother of an autistic son, understands firsthand the challenges these routines can present. “My autistic son, James, finds everyday tasks, like getting dressed, overwhelming and frustrating,” she explains. “I realised if I combined James’ love of gaming to help him complete tasks he finds hard, this would make a real difference to our lives.”
And it has. “Getting dressed and doing teeth has become so much less of a battle!” one parent shared. A paediatric occupational therapist also praised the app, stating, “We need an app like this!”
Jam Up! assists autistic children aged 5-14 in completing everyday tasks through engaging digital play. It offers customisable tasks to fit seamlessly into existing routines, educational videos, and daily tips for parents and carers to promote their child’s independence. The benefits are clear: increased independence for autistic children, improved well-being for both children and caregivers, reduced time spent on tasks, and enhanced school and work attendance.
The app’s early success is a testament to its effectiveness. “Game-changing in the morning!” exclaimed Morwenna, parent of an 8-year-old autistic child. Jam Up! has already won several accolades, including the N-CODE Pitching Competition at the University of Birmingham and the Startup Cornwall Slush’d Pitching Competition. They were also runners-up in the Essex Care Tech Challenge.
The developers aren’t resting on their laurels. They’ve recently unveiled prototypes for augmented reality features, designed to further enhance engagement. A new YouTube channel, created by a 12-year-old autistic young person, showcases the creativity and dedication behind the project. The app was even featured on BBC Spotlight and BBC Sounds, raising awareness of the diverse needs of autistic young people.
Looking ahead, the team is working on a range of updates inspired by user feedback, including new in-app features like a pet adventure, additional clothing options in a virtual wardrobe, and enhanced accessibility. A brand new website is also in the works.
Jam Up! is available for download now. The developers encourage users to leave positive reviews and share their feedback. This local initiative is making a real difference in the lives of families across the UK, empowering autistic children to navigate daily routines with greater ease and independence.
